Economic and organisational democracy

The meso level of economic democracy

The meso-level of economic democracy relates to sectoral and regional issues such as the promotion of democratic economic development at regional, municipal and/or sectoral level through regional or sector-specific economic and transformation councils or the socialisation of economic sectors that are central to the satisfaction of basic needs, such as the housing or energy sector.

At the meso level, questions arise as to how production units in the sector work together, what non-market organisation within a sector might look like, how stakeholders can be involved in decision-making and how much self-determination the sectors have with regard to overall economic development.

Here we identify various strands, or varieties, of economic democracy, some of which have already been applied in practice.
