Economic and organisational democracy

3-level model of economic and organisational democracy

The 3-level model provides an overview of the spectrum of economic and organisational democratic ideas, concepts and practical examples.  Structurally, economic democracy can be viewed from different levels. The macro, meso and micro levels appear to be particularly relevant:

At the macro level, the focus is on the democratisation of macroeconomic and political-economic issues. For example, through democratic framework planning, a fundamental promotion of public and co-operative ownership or an expansion of public services of general interest.

The meso level relates to sectoral and regional issues, such as the promotion of democratic economic development at regional/municipal and/or sectoral level through regional or sector-specific economic and transformation councils, or the socialisation of economic sectors that are central to the satisfaction of basic needs, such as the housing or energy sector.

The micro level addresses the democratisation of corporate policy issues, such as employee participation in the workplace and in work organisation, as well as in strategic orientation and product policy, through to participation in ownership and profits. Economic democracy as a comprehensive concept aims to interlink the three levels mentioned above in a democratic way and to orientate economic activity towards sustainable, ecological and socially responsible development of society.
